It seems quite clear that a plane needs a stable terrain with asphalt or concrete surface for landing. But what to do if there is no such area within a distance of hundreds of kilometers and you need to build an airport? Ice Runway is an airport, which is proof that a person will find a way out of every situation, even if this way was … quite scary.
Pilots flying from and to the Ice Runway Airport, which is located in Antarctica, say that the very moment of landing resembles those taking place on „traditional” runways. However, after the machine stops, the ice (actually a huge ice floe), submerges under the weight of the plane for a few centimeters! Of course, these are not all the inconveniences that may be encountered here by the pilot. The runway itself is ice, and thus, the plane takes off and lands on a slippery surface.
It is getting warmer around this area around December, which is why air operations would be too dangerous here. The airport is simply closed during the summer.
